The Impact of Consumerism on Disciple Making Part 4: Demands of Consumerism
Tuesday Feb 15, 2022
Tuesday Feb 15, 2022
We’ve learned a lot about consumerism so far. Notably, its three tenets, 1. Satisfaction Can Be Purchased 2. Purchasing Power is Found in Systems 3. System Participation Demands Our Identity
3 Demands of Consumers:
- I must get what I want NOW. (DoorDash, everything!)
- I must get what I want MY WAY. (Burger King)
- I must be able to RETURN what I actually don’t want and TRY AGAIN (at your expense). (Amazon)
Takeaway: Consumers have demands because they believe the product will satisfy.
Action Step: Consider the demands you are making on your faith community. Ask the question are you a consumer or an stakeholder in your local church? (Understanding without changing never leads to growth.)

We continue our conversation around consumerism and disciple making!
Takeaway: Systems make relationships optional.
Action Step: Evaluate the system you are currently discipling in.
Show Notes:
Genesis 2:18
Questions to Consider:
- Can satisfaction really be purchased?
- Does purchasing power have to be found in an institution or system?
- Is there a way to work within a system without becoming “systematized” in our perspective and relationships?
- Where is God in all of this?
